As well as being named overall Winery of the Year, McWilliam’s had five wines feature in the Best 100 list, including two wines from the new Appellation series- the 2013 Appellation Chardonnay and 2013 Appellation Syrah. The 2007 Mount Pleasant Cellar Aged Elizabeth, 2012 Brand’s Laira “The Laira” Cabernet Sauvignon and 2012 McWilliam’s Hanwood Cabernet also secured a spot in the top 100.
Matthew’s annual list of the 100 Best Australian Wines is a keenly followed announcement and carries substantial prominence in the UK wine market.
With over 9 million Daily Mail readers a week, Matthew has the most keenly followed wine column in the UK. He also writes a weekly piece for MoneyWeek and occasionally for The Week, as well having authored a total of fourteen books.
In 2011 Matthew was voted the most influential wine writer in the UK by OLN and he has also won the highly prestigious International Wine & Spirits Competition’s Trophy for Wine Communicator of the Year.
McWilliam’s Chief Winemaker Jim Chatto attended the announcement in London on the 3rd of June and says that the results are a welcomed recognition of the hard work and talent of the whole McWilliam’s winemaking team.
“Matthew has long been a champion of great Australian wine, and the influence of his 100 Best Australian Wines is significant. We’re honoured to have received the award for Winery of the Year; it’s a great acknowledgement of the efforts of the whole winemaking team.
I am especially excited to see two of the new McWilliams ‘Appellation’ range wines recognised on debut, as these represent a focused commitment to what’s great about New South Wales wine, whilst setting the scene for the future of the McWilliams brand.”
